Special Abilities

Tifa's magical abilities come from materia, which she only has a limited supply of now. Her best ability is her skill at martial arts. She was trained for years to fight with her hands and feet, relying on her own strength, both inner and outer. Tifa also has an extremely strong character. She stands for what she believes in and those she loves and also is rather smart. She's able to use her surroundings to her advantage in battle. Without her materia, Tifa is a normal woman who knows how to fight well.

Background

Tifa grew up in the small town of Nibelheim, living next door to Cloud. They were never very close, but Cloud was the only one to follow Tifa up Mt. Nibel after her mother died when she was 8. The bridge broke, tossing the kids to the ground below. Tifa was knocked unconscious and was in a coma for seven days, while Cloud only suffered minor injuries. He was blamed for the incident and forbidden to see her. Later, she asked him to meet her at the well one night, where she eventually made him promise that when he was famous and she needed him, he would come save her.

Cloud left to join SOLDIER and Tifa remained in Nibelheim taking martial arts lessons from a man named Zangan til the day two SOLDIERs and two grunts were assigned to look at the Nibelheim reactor. The SOLDIERs are Sephiroth and Zack and Tifa was hired to guide them to the reactor. The way is dangerous and once again, the rope bridge breaks, sending them all tumbling down. One of the grunts is lost, but no one else is hurt, and the others hurry onward. When they finally come across the reactor, Sephiroth refuses to let Tifa inside, saying only ShinRa people are allowed in. Cloud is the one set to guard her, though she doesn't know it's him. That night, after everyone is asleep, Sephiroth burns the town. Tifa, distraught over what she sees, follows him to the reactor, where she finds he's killed her father. Screaming that she hates ShinRa and SOLDIER, she picks up Masamune and goes to strike Sephiroth down. Of course, he manages to strike her instead, leaving her with a bad injury. Cloud and Zack arrive then just as Sephiroth goes into the Jenova room. Cloud moves Tifa aside, though she barely remembers through the haze of her injury. Later, Zangan comes to save her, though he can't save anyone else, and takes her off to Midgar to be healed.

He eventually leaves Midgar when she's healed and she opens a bar called Tifa's 7th Heaven, which serves as a secret base for the anti-ShinRa organization, AVALANCHE. Barret comes over with his adopted daughter Marlene, and Tifa immediately stands in as Marlene's mother figure. Four years after the Nibelheim incident, Tifa finds a confused and dissociated Cloud in the slums of Sector 7, deciding to take him back to 7th Heaven with her to keep an eye on him. She gets him to agree to go on several missions with AVALANCHE and it's after one of these that she remids him of his promise to save her from so long ago. He tells her that he can't keep their promise, which doesn't make her very happy. After their last mission, Cloud falls from the landing past the reactor. Tifa can't reach out to save him from falling and so Barret has to take her back to 7th Heaven alone. Later, they hear murmurs that ShinRa is planning something and Don Corneo knows what it is. So Tifa, knowing full well what Corneo is like, dresses up nicely and has herself taken to his mansion. Cloud, dressed up in a dress and wig, is accompanied by Aerith - Tifa saw them in the playground together and got the "wrong idea" while she was being carted off to Corneo's - to help Tifa out. One of the three of them is chosen to be the Don's date for the night, the other two escape, and the three reconvene in Corneo's room to convince him to tell them what's going on. By means of threatening his manhood, yes I'm serious, he's convinced to spill the beans and tell them that shinRa is planning on destroying Sector 7 by dropping the plate on them.

Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith get dumped into the sewers about then and make their way to Sector 7, arriving just in time to go help Barret up at the top of one of the plate's support pillars. Cloud asks Aerith to take care of Wedge and Tifa asks Aerith to go find Marlene and take her somewhere safe. Aerith agrees to both and so Tifa and Cloud run up the pillar to help Barret. The three encounter Reno and Rude of the Turks and after fighting them, the three are greeted with the sight of Tseng, another turk, taking Aerith captive. Aerith manages to get out a cryptic message to Tifa before the helicopter takes off, however, and so Tifa is led to believe that Marlene is safe.

Tifa, Cloud, and Barret find their freedom and escape along a cable wire, swinging out of Sector 7 just before the plate crashes. After Tifa assures Barret that Marlene has to be safe, Cloud takes the other two to Aerith's house, where they're greeted by Marlene and Aerith's guardian, Elmyra. The next day, the three warriors set off to go save Aerith, by breaking into ShinRa. Tifa and Barret provide excellent comedic relief on the stair-climbing adventure that follows as the trio breaks into ShinRa. They make their way up to Hojo's lab, where they then confront him, save Aerith, and meet Nanaki. Eventually, they are all captured and stuck in prison cells across the floor from Hojo's lab. In the middle of the night, something happens and they find their prison cells open. Following the trail of blood, they realize that ShinRa's president is dead, killed by Sephiroth's sword. Cloud orders the group to leave and eventually they all escape together, Cloud on a motorcyle and everyone else in a little truck. They find themselves on the edge of the city and the decision is made to leave Midgar completely.

First stop is Kalm, where Cloud recounts the story of how he knows Sephiroth and what happened at the reactor. Tifa is troubled by his story since, as she puts it later, he knows things he shouldn't and doesn't know things he should, but she doesn't say anything about it.

The group then travels around the countryside to Junon, meeting up with the Turks along the way for small chitchat before continuing. On the ship from Junon to Costa del Sol, they stowaway, hiding as ShinRa sailors, and then encounter Sephiroth for the first time. Once the ferry lands in Costa del Sol, they get to chat with Hojo for a little before heading out for the small mining town of North Corel. Here, they find out about Barret's past before they take a trip to the Gold Saucer to cool off a little. There they meet Cait Sith, who reads their fortune and insists on joining them. They end up getting framed for several murders in the Battle Square and are sent to the desert prison beneath North Corel. Accompanying Barret down here, he's able to settle his past and they earn the rights to gain passage out of the prison.

Next stop: Cosmo Canyon, where they learn all about Nanaki. After that is Nibelheim, where the real mystery begins. The town is completely rebuilt and no one remembers the fire at all. Tifa and Cloud are confused. They don't understand at all. They move past the reactor and down Mount Nibel towards Rocket Town, where they meet Cid and encounter Rufus ShinRa and the Turks again. Using Cid's Tiny Bronco, they make their escape yet again and Cid joins their cause. The group then hears tale of a Temple of the Ancients that the ShinRa want to see. This takes them on a roundabout journey to see Dio back at the Gold Saucer, where they get the keystone they need and get stuck for a night. During this night, Tifa has the opportunity to go on a date with Cloud and she comes so very close to admitting her feelings for him, but chickens out at the last moment and leaves him utterly clueless.

The rather large group - Tifa, Cloud, Barret, Aerith, Nanaki, Cid, Cait Sith, and (if the player grabs them by this point) Vincent and Yuffie - continue on to the Temple. Here they discover the terror known at the Black Materia, powerful materia that's rumored to be able to call a Meteor big enough to destroy the Planet, and that Sephiroth's master plan revolves around using this materia. The party extracts the Black Materia and Sephiroth manipulates Cloud into giving it to him. After that, he's taken to Gongaga, where he wakes up with Tifa and Barret watching over him. By this point, Tifa is feeling very conflicted about Cloud and Barret tells her to just believe in him.

Because Cloud had a dream that Aerith was going to the Forgotten City of the Ancients alone, he convinces everyone to go with him after her. They arrive just in time to see Sephiroth kill her, an act that would forever scar Tifa. First her hometown, then her father, and now her best friend. Sephiroth would have a lot to answer for in her eyes. They follow the madman's trail north to the Northern Crater, where Jenova crash-landed 2000 years ago. Here, Cloud both finds and loses the Black Materia, setting off a chain reaction within the mako-infested crater where the real Sephiroth lies dormant. Everyone but Cloud escapes on Rufus' airship as WEAPONS are released upon the earth. Tifa sleeps another week of her life away and wakes up to find that Meteor is coming and she's about to be executed alongside Barret for causing all the mayhem. Tifa gets stuck in the gas chamber first, but manages to break her bonds, though she can't escape the room itself until Sapphire WEAPON blows a hole in the side of the building. She climbs up that hole and heads out onto the infamous Junon canon, where she is eventually caught up to by Scarlet. Here ensues an epic bitchslap fest. Upon slapping Scarlet to her knees, Tifa takes off for the end of the canon and manages to leap off, catching a rope hanging off the end of the airship Barret and Cait Sith stole. Everyone else is there, but Tifa is elected temporary leader while Cloud is gone.

Eventually, word comes to them that someone bearing Cloud's description has washed up on the shores of a small town called Mideel. Tifa goes to see him and even though he can't see, hear, or speak due to Mako poisoning, she vows to stay with him and nurse him back to health. A while after the party, led by Cid, leaves, they return to find a WEAPON attacking Mideel, causing the Lifestream to rise to the surface and swallow the entire town up. Tifa and Cloud can't quite escape and so they fall into the Lifestream. Tifa enters Cloud's subconsciousness and together the two of them sort out Cloud's memories, breaking through the walls and the lies that were built up around him. At the edge of what was once Mideel, they are found again and Cloud can speak.

Several journies are made here, including a trip back to the Forgotten City, where they find out about Aerith's prayer to the Planet about holy. An assault on Midgar is made after that, another WEAPON is halted, and the party goes to have a final showdown with Hojo. They defeat him, though half of ShinRa is killed in the backlash from the Sister Ray, which was moved from Junon to help protect Midgar.

Afterwards, Cloud tells everyone to go home to the people they love and consider coming back only if they truly believe they want to fight for the Planet. Tifa and Cloud have nowhere to go, so they stay under the shadow of the Highwind, and have a sweet night together. Their quest is ultimately successful and Meteor is halted by Holy and the Lifestream, though Midgar is forever destroyed.

Two years later, Tifa's bar has reopened, this time in the town called Edge. Marlene and an orphan boy named Denzel become Tifa's charges, her pride and joy, and she takes great pride in being their mother figure. Tifa takes Marlene to Aerith's church to visit Cloud and that's when she discovers that Cloud has Geostigma, that he's sick with the incurable disease. Loz comes in then to "play" and Tifa gives him a fight he won't soon forget. Unfortunately, he gets the better of her and she passes out for a bit, until Cloud comes back and wakes her up.

He takes her back home to Edge and that night they have a discussion about who's going to fetch Marlene and the rest of the children from the Forgotten City, where the Remnants took up residency. Cloud tries to convince Tifa to go, but she turns it all against him, saying that he should be the one to go and he finally agrees. She spends the rest of the night in Edge, before waking up in Wonderland.
